Regional Capital Newcastle

You will find that Newcastle will be a regular place to visit as you get to know its university campuses and its dazzling variety of attractions. This fascinating and vibrant city, loved by locals and by visitors alike, is home to innovative business, two major universities and world famous football club Newcastle United, who play at St James’ Park. You will enjoy its bustling shopping streets, the Eldon Square shopping centre, as well as its variety of interesting museums, art galleries and attractions.

Famous for its culture, the city’s highlights include the Theatre Royal (Northern home of the Royal Shakespeare Company) which stages high quality productions; the Sage Gateshead for concerts of all genres - classical, rock, pop, jazz and folk; and the Metro Arena for pop concerts. Around the city centre are smaller theatres, cinemas, comedy clubs and a variety of music venues.

As a world famous party city, Newcastle is crammed with night clubs, pubs both traditional and trendy, and restaurants of every flavour, Indian, Italian, French, Belgian, Spanish, Turkish, Japanese, Greek, Chinese, Mexican, American, Thai and traditonal English, of course, where you can sample roast beef and Yorkshire puddings as well as fish and chips.

Getting around Newcastle is easy on the Metro system linking the city with the coast and other regional destinations.

Historic Northumberland

Whitley Bay is the gateway to Northumberland, the least populated and most unspoilt English county. Spectacular hills and valleys are dotted with pretty villages on scenic, uncrowded roads. The coast is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its wide sandy bays, castles and fishing harbours . Its rich wildlife ranges from the seal colony and the puffins on the Farne Islands to the wild goats roaming the Cheviot Hills.

Northumberland’s often turbulent history is told by a wealth of fabulous castles, mansion houses, monasteries, hill forts and the rich Roman heritage of Hadrian’s Wall.

Lindisfarne and Tynemouth Priories recall the Golden Age of Northumbria when works from scholars like the Venerable Bede were read and admired across Europe.

In Northumberland heaven, earth and sea blend in a land of far horizons, big skies and breathtaking views. Here you will glimpse wilderness and landscapes that evoke a deep sense of inner peace.

Whitley Bay

The English School is situated on the sea front at Whitley Bay, a lively seaside town on the North East coast, only 25 minutes by Metro train from Newcastle upon Tyne, home of two of the region’s prestigious universities, the University of Newcastle and Northumbria University.

This stretch of the coastline has award winning sandy beaches at Whitley Bay and at neighbouring Cullercoats and Tynemouth.

The famous lighthouse on St. Mary’s Island in Whitley Bay is a delightful attraction for both locals and visitors alike, hosting exhibitions and activities as well as being an important nature reserve.

People come to the beach to walk, jog, train for the world-famous Great North Run half marathon, explore rock pools, fly kites and even to make Hollywood movies.

Whitley Bay has a good selection of interesting shops, a theatre, an excellent library which you can join, numerous sports clubs, a local football team and a variety of bars, cafés and restaurants.

There are opportunities in the town for all kinds of sports, swimming, ice-skating, bowling, golf, tennis, football, rugby and cricket. You can go sailing, fishing, scuba diving and surfing.

Whatever your interests, we can help you get involved.
